Violent Green Shield

The work takes as its starting point the relationship, often denied, between humans and plant speciesin urban context. Vegetation, in Google Earth images, is reduced to geometric abstractions, to entities for technical and urban renderings. Deprived of any organic, vital and complex dimension, vegetation becomes ‘green’: a pure chromatic and formal dimension.

In Naples, crossing the green zones looks like a risky act that iconoclastically punctures the urban norm and functionality. The video plays with this idea using a google earth virtual work as material. The soundtrack signed by Franco Campanino from the film ‘Napoli si Ribella’, a poliziottesco directed by Tarantini in 1977, emphasises with sounds and conversations the violent dynamics of the anthropocentric and macho appropriation of territory.

In the video, this geometric green becomes a metaphor for those few centimetres of fertile soil that make all the difference: the earth as a hollow, frayed sphere that under its green shield rejoins deep space.
